ADULTICIDING
There are many different methods for killing adult mosquitoes. The city of Jamestown fogs, or mists. Fogging and misting operations are conducted during the early evening, at night, or in early morning when the air is calm, or winds vary from 1 to 8 miles per hour. The wind speed must be taken every half hour when fogging. If winds are exceptionally strong, fogs and mists are dispersed so swiftly that effectiveness is reduced. Similarly, fogs generated during the middle of a hot day may drift across pavements or roads and be dispersed by rising currents of warm air. By contrast, at night, there may be an inversion of air temperature so that fogs are held close to the ground as thick, long-lasting blankets, producing excellent control of mosquitoes. Under normal operating conditions, the space-spraying machines travel at 8-12 miles per hour. Some of the larger thermal fog generators have a rated maximum output of up to 120 gallons per hour, but normally disperse about 80 gallons with machines traveling 10 miles per hour. Outdoor space treatments with mist or fog machines have been carried out effectively against species of Aedes, Culex, Mansonia, and Psorophora mosquitos. Control of adult mosquitoes by space spraying effects only temporary control. If mosquito populations are high, and the species are strong fliers, such as pest mosquitoes in the genera Aedes, Culex, Mansonia, and Psorophora, migration back into the area may occur following treatment, making daily applications necessary. The city of Jamestown will be sprayed according to a daily mosquito count. There are six mosquito traps placed in various areas of the city, which are collected every morning. The mosquitoes in these traps are counted and divided into the male and female sexes, as only the females will bite and possibly spread disease. When the average count per trap reaches 120 females, the radio, newspaper, and TV stations will be alerted 24 hours ahead of time that we will be fogging the city at night. The chemical used for the fogging is called Anvil
