North
Dakota State Hospital Phone 701-253-3650
The North Dakota
State Hospital provides specialized psychiatric and substance abuse
services for individuals whose needs exceed the resources and capacity
of other community services.
The NDSH is
a part of the North Dakota Department of Human Services, and as
such, works closely with community-based service providers, both
public and private, to provide the range of mental health services
need by North Dakota citizens.
System-wide
leadership is provided by the Department of Human Services. The
NDSH Governing Body is empowered to work with NDSH and DHS to determine
and maintain the mission, role, purpose and values of the hospital
to ensure that accreditation and licensing requirements are met.
Leadership is a shared function between management and clinical
leaders, with primary direction coming from the superintendent/CEO
and medical director.
The administration
consists of Alex Schweitzer, superintendent and Alan Broadhead,
M.D., medical director.
NDSH is fully
accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care
Organizations, and by the Health Care Financing Administration.
A full JCAHO survey was completed in the fall of 1997.
Services are
provided to adolescents and adults whose psychiatric and/or substance
abuse problems require more intensive, inpatient level of care.
The average daily patient population is approximately 230.
Annual admissions
to NDSH are approximately 1,500. Length of stay is determined by
individual patient need, with the goal of returning each patient
to his/her community. The State Hospital provides a full range of
evaluation, treatment and broad therapeutic services to its diverse
patient population. Services range from short-term assessment and
stabilization to specialized residential services for specific populations.
The work of the various clinical disciplines is integrated and delivered
across each of the primary services units. Treatment services are
individualized and include therapy as well as patient and family
education. Programs are organized into three primary services: adult
psychiatric service, chemical dependency service and child and adolescent
service.
The NDSH employs
approximately 600 staff.
